This question came up during Office Hours in the Academic Writing Studio and also in a Wayfinding conversation with another client. I’m going to share an excerpt of the Office Hours recording here.
Some context: The person asking the question is in her early career. This was the Office Hours in the week following Planning Your Summer, so she’s thinking specifically about how to move forward her book project and get started on a grant application over the summer. She is in Canada and a humanities scholar so the specific agency she will apply to is SSHRC (usually pronounces as “shirk”, which you’ll hear on the recording). My comments are general enough that they apply more broadly.
Key issues discussed:
- How thinking of a programme of research rather than a series of discreet projects helps reduce the sense of competition between projects.
- How a programme of research helps you when you apply for promotion.
- How a programme of research helps you frame your grant application.
