The Library contains posts on topics related to my work as Academic Career Guide and director of the Academic Writing Studio. The best point of entry is the library homepage, which highlights a few posts on key topics and facilitates navigation by category. The search box in the navigation bar enables you to search the site by keyword.
This page uses the standard blog layout: posts in reverse chronological order of publication date with this “sticky post” at the top to explain how things work. In keeping with the idea of a Library, it is like the “Recent Acquisitions” shelf in your local library, highlighting things that have been added to the collection.
Posts are added irregularly. I usually send new materials to either Studio members or subscribers to one of my newsletters first. Updated versions eventually end up here, with a note acknowledging the previous version. I also periodically update older posts. If I do not change the original publication date, the date of the most recent edit will be indicated at the bottom of the post. If I do republish, the date of original publication will be indicated at the bottom of the post.
In 2016 I started collating, revising, and updating material first published in the Library to create and publish Short Guides. These short books on key topics make it easier to get an overview of my approach to particular areas of your academic life. In the same way that you might begin with a blog post or information conversation, develop a conference paper, and then publish a journal article, I have written here in the Library, to my newsletters, and then developed ebooks and paperbacks.
