Maybe something good is happening but your gremlins are shouting “Impostor!!” so loudly it’s hard to really think clearly much less prepare. Perhaps you’ve got a tricky decision to make, or a difficult conversation to have. Or your spidey sense is tingling about something and you aren’t sure if it’s really something to worry about and if it is, what to do about it.
I’m sure you have mentors and colleagues who have useful information and advice. I also know that there are times when they might not be the best people to ask. Perhaps they are involved in the situation in a way that makes it hard for you to be totally honest. Maybe the support you need isn’t the kind of support they are really good at. And ohmygawd, they do not need to know about any Freaking Out. The last thing you need right now is for your mentors and colleagues to suspect that you might be quietly but emphatically losing your cool.
You would benefit from a neutral third party to talk to.
I’m not part of your normal context. I’m not competing with you. I’m not attached to any particular outcome for this situation. I won’t think less of you for freaking out because, quite frankly, we all freak out a bit sometimes.
