New Scholars & SSHRC’s Insight grants

The SSHRC Standard Research Grant is no more. 2010/11 was the last competition.

It has been replaced, more or less, with the Insight Grant. However, if you are in the first 5 years of your academic career (defined by the later of PhD completion or starting first tenure-track position) and have not received a SSHRC grant before (as faculty), there are important changes that affect you.
You should apply to the Insight Development Grant

The accommodations for new scholars in the old SRG program are gone. If you apply to the main Insight program in the fall, you will be competing against more experienced scholars with no special consideration for your newness. Continue reading

The decision to fund your research isn’t based on the form or budget

The forms and budget are important. But the decision to fund your research isn’t going to be based on them.

They can lose you the funding but they aren’t going to get you the funding. As such, they should be the last part of the application process you attend to.

Your proposal is the key

All funding competitions require you to append a proposal. The length of the proposal, the suggested headings, and a few other structural details will vary depending on the funder but no matter who you are applying to, you are going to need a clear proposal.
