Moving forward after an unsuccessful SSHRC Standard Research Grant application (webinar)
Didn’t get the SSHRC Grant you applied for last October? Just received your comments?
I bet you’re disappointed. And frustrated.
You feel like you’ve done the best you could but it wasn’t quite good enough. Knowing that lots of excellent proposals don’t get funded because there just isn’t enough money probably doesn’t help.
The comments often raise more questions than they answer. What do they mean? Which ones are important? What can you ignore? How do you decide whether you should just revise the proposal a bit or whether you need to do something more substantial to be competitive?
I can help
What you need is a clearer sense of what needs to be done and a plan for achieving your goals. You would rather spend time doing research than writing grant proposals, but you need the grant to really be able to do the research.
In this webinar, I will walk you through that package of comments, explaining how to read them and use them in your decision making. I’ll explain how external assessors’ comments relate to the score and the decision. I’ll help you decide which comments to take seriously and which you can safely ignore.
Then we’ll shift the focus to your research goals and getting the resources to achieve those goals. What are your options? How do you make the best use of the next few months to advance those goals? How can you best use whatever internal funds are available?
By the end of the seminar you should have a clearer idea of what your choices are and what each involves. Set aside an hour or so later that day or the next day to really look at your comments and seminar notes and make a plan for the summer and a decision about when you will resubmit a funding application.
You should have a plan that involves doing research and revising your application before the fall semester starts.
What the heck is a webinar?
A webinar is a seminar that doesn’t need us all to be in the same room. We use a telephone conference bridge and a bit of software that allows me to share my computer desktop with participants via an internet connection. Don’t worry, you don’t need to download anything.
I’ll give a presentation to start things off. My PowerPoint slides include anonymized samples of SSHRC committee comments so you are sure that you understand which page I’m talking about. Then I’ll open it up for questions and discussion. Because we are on the phone, you get to choose how much other participants know about you and your project.
The details
The presentation is scheduled for 90 minutes to allow time for questions and discussion. You will need a phone and a computer connected to the internet. Details of the call-in number and how to view the Power Point slides will be sent on registration. You may need to pay long-distance charges in addition to the course fee.
Monday June 15, 1 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time $50
Any questions? Send me an e-mail or drop by my booth in the book fair at Congress at Carleton University. I’ll be there all week.
